Installing the life-size giraffe sculpture "Camille" at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC.  The sculpture was designed to be installed
without the use of special equipment.  The neck mobile, body frame and front legs pivot  up into place as one assembly.
CAD and ART: ...so how do you balance all that stuff...!
One of the challenges inherent to building mobiles is determining the gravity center
of complex shapes and complex assemblies.  If you want a particular piece to hang
at a particular orientation, you must first know its center of gravity.  3-dimensional
computer modeling software can be used to find complex gravity centers.
"2 Daisies" - CAD
The image at left shows a CAD printout of the giraffe with neck and spot gravity
centers shown.  These locations were critical to building the final sculpture as it was
drawn.  The sculpture
"2 Daisies at Play" was also designed using CAD.  "2 Daisies"
was built as an application test combining CAD and art.  Either of these pieces could
have been built using trial and error however their success allowed for the design
and construction of
"Damselfly and Lily" for First Charter Bank.  Due to its size and
aggressive installation schedule, the Damselfly would have been difficult to
accomplish by trial and error...the computer model definitely sped up the process by
allowing for CNC parts cutting and dimensioned fabrication drawings.
